Soft and Healthy Cinnamon Buns with Jaggery Powder

There’s nothing better than the comforting aroma of freshly baked cinnamon buns. This recipe swaps out refined sugar for jaggery powder, a natural sweetener packed with minerals and a deep caramel-like flavour. Using whole wheat flour makes these buns a bit more wholesome while keeping them soft and fluffy. Perfect for a guilt-free indulgence!

Ingredients
For the Dough
2 cups whole wheat flour
½ cup milk (lukewarm)
¼ cup butter (melted)
¼ cup jaggery powder
1 large egg
1 tsp yeast
½ tsp salt
For the Filling
¼ cup jaggery powder
2 tbsp softened butter
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp flour
For the Topping
½ cup homemade cottage cheese
2 tsp sugar-free sweetener
1-2 tbsp milk
¼ tsp vanilla extract

Method
Warm the milk until it is lukewarm, then add the yeast and let it sit for about five minutes until frothy.

In a large bowl, combine whole wheat flour and salt. In a separate bowl, mix melted butter and jaggery powder. Once cooled slightly, add this mixture to the yeast mixture along with the egg.

Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the flour mixture and knead until a smooth dough forms. If the dough is sticky, dust your hands with flour and continue kneading. Cover and let the dough rest for about an hour to an hour and a half, allowing it to rise. Once it has risen, punch it down to release air.

For the filling, mix jaggery powder, softened butter, cinnamon, and flour. Roll out the dough into a rectangle and spread the filling evenly.

Roll the dough into a tight log and slice it into even portions. Arrange them in a greased baking dish, leaving space for them to expand. Cover and let them rest for another 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

For the topping, blend cottage cheese, sugar-free sweetener, milk, and vanilla extract to form a smooth paste. Drizzle over warm cinnamon buns before serving.
